AmeriCorps Week

This week was AmeriCorps Week. Lots of fun stuff going on all over the country. It's all about promoting AmeriCorps and being recognized for the work that the thousands of people are doing in America. In central Indiana, the state office held a forum for all of the VISTAs at IUPUI. We watched a really good documentary about Sargent Shriver. A rough summary of who he was... He was the brother-in-law of JFK. He was in charge of the Peace Corps, VISTA, and a large handful of other national service organizations when they all started in the 60s. He was a cool guy, I would have liked to know him. Then we all discussed the movie and talked about our current projects and then had a little reception.

It's been a good week here at Starfish. The Open House is just around the corner, so the usual rush to the finish line is currently in progress. We've made final decisions for food, the parking lot tent has been rented, and Bethany and I have been busy trying to creatively decorate the main hallway. The only snag I've hit is getting coffee donated for the dedication ceremony in the morning. I honestly thought this was going to be the easy part, but not one Starbucks I've talked to is able to donate. Plan B is to call other places besides Starbucks.

The renovation is almost done!! The lounge looks the best right now, but I'm sure the new commons area will be really nice. I promise to post pictures when it's all finally complete.

On a more personal note, my roommates and I have to move out of our house. :( We got a letter in the mail from our landlord that informed us that our rent was increasing 30% starting July 1. This was COMPLETELY unexpected and none of us can pay to live there at that rate. So, Wednesday night we began the hunt for a new place to live. This all comes at a very inopportune time. Jarod leaves Wednesday for a 6 week internship in Ireland, Alexa's on rotations, and Becca and I are both going on week long vacations at the end of June (when our lease is up). I have faith that everything will work out and I can't let myself get stressed. There is nothing I can do to control the situation and getting crazy and frustrated isn't going to help.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! We're doing some house/apartment hunting and then our BeadforLife Party/Extreme Makeover: Home Edition viewing is Sunday from 6-10pm. Every one's welcome to come... let me know if you want more info.

  2. I actually did and we're signing the lease on the house I found on Craigslist today. The landlord is really nice.
